Idanre Hills<\/b> is a major tourist destination in <\/span>Ondo state<\/b>, <\/span>Nigeria<\/b>. In the past, the hills offered protection against invaders. The<\/span> ancient town of Idanre<\/b>\u00a0is fifteen kilometers South West of <\/span>Akure<\/b>, the State Capital of Ondo. The Idanre hills was added to the <\/span>UNESCO World Heritage<\/b> in 2007. In the past, the hills provided protection for the ancient town of Idanre from invaders The ancient town can be found on top of the hill while the modern day settlement is at the base of the hills. \u00a0The Idanre town is one of the highest <\/span>Cocoa producers in Nigeria<\/b>. The <\/span>Ondo State Government<\/b> has commenced the construction of an eighteen inches hole-golf course at <\/span>Atosin-Idanre<\/b> and a forty bedroom hotel in collaboration with other private investors.<\/span><\/p>\n

A <\/span>descendant of Oduduwa<\/b>, the ancestors \u00a0of the yoruba people, stole <\/span>Ade Omo Oduduwa<\/b> which is the magical crown and fled <\/span>Ile Ife<\/b>,<\/span> Osun state<\/b>. The crown was meant for Oduduwa\u2019s son and \u00a0for that he incurred the wrath of his kinsmen. They were chased deep into the forest and hence had to live \u00a0a nomadic lifestyle for many years until they came upon a range of hills. In awe, they exclaimed: \u201c<\/span>Idanree<\/i><\/b>!\u201d( a yoruba word for \u201cthis is wonder\u201d). The hills became their protection from invaders, hence, they lived for over 800 years on the hill until they migrated to the base of the hill in the year 1923.<\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span>legend of the Idanre Hills<\/b> is related to <\/span>Agboogun<\/b>,who was a great hunter with supernatural ability. It was believed that the great hunter asked three of his friends to accompany him on a journey which on their way, he paused to inscribe <\/span>hieroglyphics<\/b> on a hillside, and the cryptic inscription became known as the \u201c<\/span>Unreadable Signs<\/i><\/b>\u201d on the hills. It was believed that the <\/span>warriors of ancient Idanre<\/b> drank the <\/span>sacred thunder water<\/b>(<\/span>Omi Aopara<\/b>) which was formed when lightning strikes the rocks and it made them victorious in all their battles.<\/span><\/p>\n

Climbing the Idanre hills<\/b><\/h2>\n

To get to the top of the hill, you would have to climb six hundred and sixty seven <\/span>idanre hill steps<\/b> with five resting spots. During the course of climbing you will come across notable historical monuments such as the native court building, the <\/span>mausoleum<\/b>, the<\/span> Owa\u2019s secretary\u2019s office<\/b>, the <\/span>Oloris\u2019 quarters<\/b>, the <\/span>ancient palace<\/b>, the <\/span>first primary school in old Oke-Idanre<\/b>, the mat rock at <\/span>old Oke-Idanre<\/b>, the<\/span> native court<\/b>, <\/span>Owa Cave<\/b> and <\/span>Arun River<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Oke Idanre hill<\/b> consists of high plain with valleys interspersed with inselbergs of about 3,000 ft. An inselberg is an isolated hill that rises abruptly from a virtually level surrounding plain. Major features of the Idanre hills includes:<\/span><\/p>\n

The Agbagba Hill<\/b>: This hill is related to <\/span>Agboogun<\/b>. On the hill, there are mysterious footprints that contract and expand to accommodate all feet put into them. The Carter Hill<\/b>: This hill was named after a former colonial Governor who signed a peace treaty with the Oba of Idanre dated back in 1891.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Ajimoba Hill<\/b>: This hill was named after a dedicated King\u2019s gateman.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Ilesun Hill<\/b>: This is named after a great warrior who killed his daughter in fulfillment of his vow to sacrifice the first living thing that would come his way if he should win the war he went into. The daughter was buried at the base of the Ilesun Hill. <\/span><\/p>\n

The Arun River<\/b>: It is a small river found on the hill. Arun is a crystal clear river where crabs and some other aquatic creatures can be found.<\/span><\/p>\n

Owa\u2019s palace<\/b>: It has a courtyard with carved figures and doors believed to be built in the seventeenth (17th) century.<\/span><\/p>\n

Old primary school buildings<\/b>: <\/span>the first primary school in Idanre which was called Igboore standard school can be found on the hills.<\/span><\/p>\n

The tombs buildings <\/b>: It is also called a mausoleum.<\/span><\/p>\n
