In some cultures, saying \u2018no\u2019 is usually perceived as being rude, not polite or being uncultured. <\/span><\/p>\n

My grandmother who hails from a place in Nigeria told me \u00a0that a child cannot say no even when it comes to very trivial issues like choices in marriage. In this part of the world a child, notwithstanding his\/her age is expected to live with the parents till marriage. Thus, when the issue of choice of\u00a0<\/a><\/span>accommodation<\/a>\u00a0and other decisions arise<\/span>,\u00a0the ability to say no\u00a0<\/em>becomes expedient.<\/span><\/p>\n

There is possibly a misconception about saying no as it has been attached to being rebellious. However, in life, some choices our parents make may not always work for us. <\/span><\/p>\n

Not being able to say no has caused so many problems in the world today, especially in Africa. These ranges from\u00a0child abuse to physical abuse, marital rape and a host of others. The effect of not being able to say no has left so many people broken without any hope for restoration. So many people turn out the victim because they can\u2019t say no. At times our traditions encourage silence which has eaten up into every sphere of our lives. Most young girls are bridled, most women are violated by their husbands on a\u00a0daily basis, and most men are under pressure, simply because they can\u2019t say no.<\/span><\/p>\n

Although, we have to respect our parent\u2019s or guardian\u2019s decisions we can still say no in a very polite way. At times, we do not say no because of the feeling of guilt\u00a0that’s attached to it. It is best to say no when we are not comfortable with the present situation; we should also say no when our rights are been trampled upon; we should say no when our joy is being tampered with; we can say no to unreliable agents<\/a>, and patronize professional <\/a><\/span>housing agents<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Saying no can be dangerous at times, this is because we have to face the consequences of our decisions. So next time, when you want to say no, think about it very well. It\u2019s best to say no when it comes to the environment to live and the kind of <\/span>house<\/span><\/a> we want to rent<\/a> and the <\/span>right time to move out your parent\u2019s house<\/span><\/a>. As a matter of fact, saying no is not an option it is a necessity!<\/span><\/p>\n

At this junction, I would add that all Nigerians should say no to <\/span>landlords <\/span><\/a>that exploit<\/a>, poor accommodation, and fraudsters who work as <\/a><\/span>agents<\/span><\/a>.
